Weekly question: would you choose a popular name?

When my daughter Chloe was little, his name was becoming well used in Britain and Australia, but barely heard in the United States. in fact, a surprising number of people who often didn't know how to pronounce or explain it. Therefore, try as I might, and much to my frustration, I could not ever find any custom pens, pencils, or little plates of mini-License for your bike unless I special ordered Lillian Vernon or Walter Drake.

Time marches on and Chloe now in the Top 10 - with more than 11,000 Chloes new entry into the world last year - which would certainly be a problem today!

A good thing or a bad thing? Annoying though that might have been not to be named "custom" option, there was something special to be semi-unique, with its being the single Chloe at his school.

You feel how use a popular name? Is there a cut point when popular becomes too popular for you? Would a name that love because many other people were choosing what is irrelevant to you?

So the question is - when is the best time to announce the baby's name - and why?

Would you have a strict no-tell policy and not make the news of your baby name decision public until after the arrival and you’re absolutely sure that the name actually fits the little mite?

Or would you be certain enough of your decision, and have no fear of the name being nabbed to pronounce it to the world at any time during your pregnancy (or even before)?

Marie was the most common name from the 15th to the 20th century in France, but although more than 1.3 million French women are still named Marie, it has finally had to let new names take over.

The rise of Old Testament names like Nathan, Gabriel, Raphaël and Noah (Noé) are in complete contrast to the decline of Marie. The fact that France is largely Catholic has, for centuries, resulted in the choice of traditional names such as Paul, Piere, Luc, Jean, Matthieu or Anne, Marie, Jeanne, Catherine. As far as boy wedding names go, it’s not quite as easy, but there are a few. Did you wear Christian Louboutin heels (or wish you did)? Were you inspired by celebrity wedding planner Colin Cowie? Or maybe you were married at a church that featured a saint’s name like Michael or Matthew.

More inspiration for a boy’s name comes from the crooners: maybe the voice of Barry White, Bryan Adams, or Elvis Presley swept you away for your first dance. In my family, we have a history of dancing to Van Morrison songs. Perhaps yours could serve as an idea for a first or middle name.

Speaking of singers – and back to baby girl names – perhaps you danced to the famous “At Last” by Etta James, or “Our Love is Here to Stay” by Billie Holiday, or a love ballad by Céline Dion. There are also a few names that go hand-in-hand with weddings, like Martha, Diana, or Victoria (the original wearer of white).

Ceremonies, of course, bring to mind some classic names like Faith, Joy, and Grace. Isla can be thought of as a fun twist on the word “aisle” and names like Jewel or Pearl are as romantically elegant as they get. And of course, there’s always Tiffany!

If you want to add a bit of wedding whimsy to your child’s name, get personal. Think about your honeymoon or wedding location, the name of the font the invitations were printed in, or the name of the town where he proposed. And if you’re not married then consider using your “how we met” or “how we fell in love” story as inspiration for baby’s name.

One of the first and most important thing parents can do for a child is to CAREFULLY consider the name they put on the birth certificate. There is the potential to cause lifelong anguish and shame to a person, as this humorous article seeks to prove.

When naming a child always consider the surname – the two must be compatible. It would be unkind and thoughtless of Mr and Mrs Dick to name their son Richard; imagine the fun his schoolmates could have! In Greece it’s traditional to name male children for their grandparents, which means little boys are saddled with unpronounceable names like Theophylaktos, Panagiotis or Eleftherios. I know a young Greek couple who were very upset when they learned they were having a son, because he was to be saddled with one of these names. I have also met a two year child called Constandinos – a rather unwieldy name for a small boy but at least he will grow into it. Girls are fortunate, because they are not named in the traditional way, which is probably the reason there aren’t too many girls called Spyridoula, Efrosyni or Glykeria.

There’s a disturbing baby naming trend among celebrities. Most of them seem to be desperate to start trends, so they seem to be obsessed with high snigger factor names for their offspring. I feel for Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s daughter Apple when she starts going to school. However if they send her to a school filled with celebrity kids her name will not be noticed, because there are far worse names these people have bestowed upon their children. Consider the monikers these poor children were burdened with by thoughtless parents:

Michael Jackson showed great originality when naming his offspring, saddling his daughter with both the name of the city where she was supposedly conceived AND his own name. Not to be outdone by his brother, Jermaine Jackson saddled his son with this cruel name.

And you thought David Duchovney and Tea Leoni looked sensible? Imagine growing old with this name.
